What's new in PortalCal
Updated 14 October 2026
PortalCal is maintained and updated. The current Windows version is 1.36, released 14 October 2026. The app updates itself: from the Microsoft Store automatically, or from Settings if you downloaded it here.
Version 1.36 — 14 October 2026
- A security update of the Microsoft .NET runtime the app runs on (10.0.13, released 13 October 2026).
- The "needs restarting" notification no longer appears in the first seconds after the PC wakes from sleep.
Version 1.35 — 11 October 2026
- A reminder change takes effect at once. Turning the calendar reminder off, or choosing a new time, is applied straight away instead of at the next scheduled check.
- A link copied out of an email — Outlook's Safe Links or Gmail's redirector — is unwrapped to the real link before it is saved, so it does not expire or get refused as a foreign site.
- After Wake this PC to sync wakes the PC, the first check waits for the network to come back instead of failing once and retrying.
- The Mac 1.35 shipped the same day.
Version 1.34 — 7 October 2026
- An update no longer rewrites every event. Before, each new version wrote every event again, and Outlook re-fired the reminder of every event already inside its reminder time. Now an update leaves your events alone unless the way they are written has changed.
- Choose how often to check. Settings → Starting up → Check for changes every offers five minutes (the shortest) up to a day. Wake this PC to sync never wakes more often than that.
- A notification's date range names the year when it is not this year.
- The main window's log no longer starts blank.
- The Mac version carries the same number from now on: 1.34 is the first Mac release with a version matching Windows.
Version 1.33 — 6 October 2026
- Repeating events are supported. A feed's "every Tuesday at 09:00" is written as each Tuesday for the next twelve months and kept up to date as the weeks go by. An occurrence the feed moves or cancels is moved or removed on its own. Before, a repeating event appeared once, on its first date.
- A new occurrence of a series you already have is not announced as a change; a new series, a moved occurrence and a cancelled one are.
- A web link in an event whose throwaway tail changes on every fetch no longer counts as a change, so the event is not rewritten, and its reminder not re-fired, every few minutes.
Version 1.32 — 5 October 2026
- A free 30-day trial is built in. PortalCal works from the first time it runs, with no key, no card and no email. The main window shows how many days are left.
- Google calendars are remembered. The Google calendar window lists the calendars PortalCal made before; Use switches back to one.
- Progress you can see. A long write counts as it goes, in green, in the window you are looking at. Sync now rewrites every event.
- Settings are easier to read. Times are chosen from lists, including the reminder (up to two weeks ahead); it says who is signed in; and rows that do not apply are hidden.
- Midnight events as all-day. An event the feed sends as starting at midnight with no end appears as a banner across the day.
- Put your history back at any time, from the history window.
- Times are shown in your computer's own time zone, whatever zone the feed is in.
- Uninstalling one of our two apps no longer disturbs the other's start-at-sign-in setting.
Version 1.31 — 30 September 2026
- An update installed by the Microsoft Store now restarts PortalCal by itself. Before, syncing stayed stopped until the next sign-in.
- The uninstall messages were corrected.
Version 1.30 — 16 September 2026
- The first release of PortalCal for Windows.
PortalCal for Mac
- Version 1.0, for macOS 14 and later: a menu bar app with the same five-minute sync into Outlook and Google, and a 30-day trial built in.
